Women Artists

Exhibition graphics for the Speed Art Museum’s presentation of the traveling exhibition Women Artists in the Age of Impressionism emphasize the boldness of these women who made their way as artists in Paris in the late 19th century.

The exhibition graphics transformed a modern lobby space with concrete walls into something that evoked 19th century Paris.

The exhibition started with an elevator door in the middle of a wall using the exterior of the École des Beaux-Arts, an art school in Paris that women were not allowed to study in for a long time. Since the women whose work is shown in the exhibition faced so much opposition, the elevator symbolizes that today, as their art is celebrated, the doors are being thrown open.

After the exhibition’s exit, a large photo of women artists in a studio provided the perfect backdrop for the pop-up store of exhibition merchandise for sale on the weekends.
